Inhibiting Oil Overflow in Electrowetting Display through Selectively Hydrophilic Modification of the Pixel Wall Based on Polydopamine and Polydopamine/Polyvinylpyrrolidone via Regional Protection Strategy

Abstract Due to the advantages of low power consumption, visual health, flexibility, and potential color dynamics, Electrowetting Display (EWD) has obtained rapid development in recent decades. One issue that affects display effect lifetime EWD devices is overflow oil across pixel wall when a high electric field applied. This paper adopts method through selectively hydrophilic modification based on dopamine self‐polymerization via regional protection strategy by liquid. The static contact angle decreases from 75.4° for original surface 48.8° modified surface. limited hydrophilicity itself, it difficult further improve wall. Taking polydopamine as intermediate layer, with polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) multiple hydrogen bonds. results show decreased 29.2° again, resulting larger wettability gradient between hydrophobic area.
